Crafting the O'Bannon message in a time of need

As a public relations practitioner, you believe you are prepared for anything. But then the unthinkable happens. Your boss - who happens to be the state's highest elected official - suffers a debilitating stroke and dies five days later. You are called upon to be the voice of the administration during one of the most trying times of your professional career.

Mary Dieter faced these experiences in September 2003 as the communications director for the late Gov. O'Bannon.  She will share her experiences and the challenges she faced in the days, weeks, and months after his death.  She also will give insights into her struggles to maintain her personal composure while serving as the top spokesperson for the governor's office.

Mary has 27 years of communications experience. She worked for nearly two decades at the Courier-Journal, serving as a reporter and bureau chief. She joined the governor's staff in May 2001 as press secretary and became communications director in October 2002.

Don't miss this insightful session that should impart practical public relations lessons for everyone who works in the field.

Cocca, McFarland take 2003 President's Awards

Myra Cocca, APR, and Stephanie McFarland, APR, earned the 2003 Hoosier Chapter President's Awards during the February luncheon.

Alice McColgin, APR, immediate-past president, presented the awards to the two for their outstanding work with adapting the chapter's accreditation program into the new Universal Accreditation in Public Relations testing format.

Myra and Stephanie successfully assembled the first new class and qualified eight people to take the exam. Four have already passed the exam. "These outstanding co-chairs are shining examples of dedication and professionalism that speak volumes about the quality of this chapter's leadership team," McColgin said.
